| Rose made his name in the Open when as a 17-year-old amateur he finished fourth at Royal Birkdale, famously chipping in at the final hole to complete a fairytale week. His decision to immediately turn pro looked to have backfired horribly when he missed 21 cuts in a row but after that nightmare start he's since matured into a top-class operator. He started to realise his vast potential with four wins in 2002 and, after another difficult period, is now emerging as a player who can challenge seriously for majors. A stunning final round charge at Augusta this year put him just one shot back teeing off on 17 (he eventually finished fifth) while he had another winning chance in the US Open at Oakmont before running out of gas on Sunday and finishing tied 10th. Surprisingly, this is his first start in the Open since 2003 but he has the game to mount a serious challenge and could emerge as the best of the home contenders. |
