| Touted by many as a likely Open champion, the Dubliner's Open record is rather disappointing. He's missed the cut on his last two appearances and only twice has he managed better than tied 20th. A fast finishing fifth at Troon in 1997 suggested he'd be a regular challenger in this event but his only real brush with victory came at Muirfield in 2002. Thinking he had to birdie the last to be in with a chance, Harrington made bogey and missed the four man play-off by a shot. Since then, his best chances of a major breakthrough have come in the US Masters and US Open although he won his own personal 'fifth major' earlier this year by becoming the first home player to capture the Irish Open in 25 years. Harrington was a modest 29th at Carnoustie in 1999 but has excelled there in the Dunhill Links. His 66 paved the way for victory in 2002 and a 68 helped him to a second win in the event last year. |
