| OPEN PROFILE |
 |
| The enigmatic Spaniard has threatened to match the Open exploits of fabled countryman Seve Ballesteros but the required dose of magic has always deserted him at the vital time. Twelve months ago a stunning third round 65 put him in the final group with Tiger Woods but he wilted under the pressure and could only finish a distant fifth. Looking at the positives it was Garcia's fifth top ten in the last six Opens and the only doubts about him winning this event are mental ones as he has all the shots required. A win at Carnoustie would be extra special for the Spanish star. Back in 1999 a young Sergio was left crying in his mother's arms after carding 89-83 to finish in last place. It would be some story if he could turn that nightmare on its head this week. |
