| OPEN PROFILE |
 |
| Els has been a standing dish in this event since finishing fifth at Muirfield back in 1992. He returned there 10 years later to lift the Claret Jug after a tense four-man play-off and his repuation as one of the finest Open players of the modern era has been stamped by five top three finishes in the last seven years. Ironically, one of his few Open disappointments came here in 1999 when his 14 over par total of 298 was 'only' good enough for tied 24th. But he's taken partial revenge on Carnoustie in the Dunhill Links championship, returning to the course in 2001 and shooting a 65. The main worry for Els backers is his loss of the winning habit. The three-time Major winner hasn't won outside of his native South Africa since May 2005 and has blown numerous victory chances. However he looked hugely impressive when just a shot out of the play-off at Loch Lomond so could be timing his return to form at the perfect moment. |
